Artist Statement

Olivia Arratia’s work engages in the social, cultural, and religious aspects of Hispanic culture, and regional aesthetics of her birthplace in Southern California. Olivia seeks to understand and preserve her heritage and her ancestral lineage. She creates photographic prints, photographic book art, video installation, and sculpture showcasing subjects of gentrification, displacement, and art accessibility are manifested in each piece as they are interwoven with memory and identity. Olivia has experimented with providing broader public access to her work by exhibiting in cultural centers and creating ofrendas in public spaces.

In her recent series Mi Corazon No Esta Lejos Del Tuyo, The experience of displacement is familiar due to separation from where she grew up and the people I grew up with. This displacement causes her to treasure-hunt areas that remind her of home. She starts her pursuit of searching for a greater sense of self through location. She then discovers that the idea of home is not just a physical place but names, colors, saints, prayers, and architecture. She realizes that her heart is not far from the ones she loves when she is surrounded by her culture.
